I'm a Christian. I also happen to work in an evangelical church. I love the people I work with, for the most part, but my children have all been hurt by the church (people) over the years and I've never blamed them for leaving it. They're currently deconstructing their faith, and each conversation with them reminds me of how far supposed Christians have gotten from Jesus's message to love God and love people. That's it. He didn't tell us to shun people who admit their struggles, or to fear and hate people who aren't exactly like our cookie-cutter selves.
I'm not to the point of leaving the church—yet—but rather I feel I'm staying in place to question the comments and attitudes, especially those of "but I'm just trying to help them!" while alienating others who desperately need someone to simply care about them. How can people be so self-centered and hateful while claiming they're the best representatives of Christianity? Ugh.
