My husband and I are both avid readers, as were our parents. Our children grasped the written word at an early age, and I have no doubt that it’s because we read to them regularly, even into their teen years, and had books on audio for longer car rides. I’ve almost always kept a dictionary on my bedside stand to look up words I didn’t know, or wasn’t 100% sure of, and now that I have that same ability on my phone, it makes it even easier.

We homeschooled, and one of the things I bought was a book called English From the Roots Up, which taught Latin and Greek root words. It came with flashcards that made the learning not so tedious, and even though school is school and every moment wasn’t fun & rainbows, my oldest told me he was thankful for those flashcards when he was taking a test for a final grade and came across a word he’d not seen before. He was able to make a solid guess because of breaking it down to the root words.

My best friend (an author) and I weren’t surprised at all to discover the only two games we each had on our phones were word games. It doesn’t have to be complicated, this learning thing.
